That's pronounced like njet, right? I think it is. Well, basically, Dutch is a lot like German. Different, but kind of similar. It's nicht in German, and the way we pronounce niet is pretty similar to the way they pronounce nicht. It's pronounced differently from the Russian njet, though. :P

Academies haven't got different level than university - but they have a specialisation. It means - in Academy of Economics you can study only economics, in Academy of Medicine - only medicine, in University you can study everything :D

If level is too high? Well... You can find paid schools... You can scavenge... But we have high unemployment...
Mmm. That's strange. Our entire education system is based on the differences in skills and abilities. We're selected after Primary School, and then pick a study we'll be able to follow and finish.

:wow: No. Really? It does?!

Wow.

That's so... wow.

It's called forum in Dutch, too. :) I wouldn't have guessed the Uprowadzenie one, though. I'm afraid I'll forget it soon, too.

Respekt means respect, doesn't it? And does mur mean wall? Cause it's muur in Dutch. :D

:strach: What a word! That one's great for hangman! :D

The longest word in Dutch would be... hottentottententententoonstelling, but it's not a word that's used very often. It means an 'exhibition of tents from the Hottentotten.' I don't think that the Hottentotten still exist. :?

P.S. I just got an e-mail in which the University I applied for, confirmed that they'd received my application in good order, and would love to have an interview with me! I'm sooo excited! I'd been waiting for that e-mail for about a month! :D The interview will be in English - I'm applying for a University at which everything's being taught in English. :? I'm quite nervous about it, actually.

There is no formal differentiation, but id doesn't mean that all places have the same level. There are better and worse schools. Each person passes the exam. And each school determines the minimum score which allows person to be recruited.
Oh! I forgot. We have also 'szkoła zawodowa' (occupational school) - it is something where you learn occupations like carpenter, cooker, welder.

Hottentotten?!

That word totally cracked me up. What is Hottentotten?! I'm assuming that it's a place somewhere, but I can't help but picturing little people (you know, like two centimeters high) who are walking around in these way too large hats.

I don't know the longest word in Swedish though...Hmm... Haven't thought about that...
Stef wrote:Respekt means respect, doesn't it? And does mur mean wall? Cause it's muur in Dutch. :D
Respect is "Respekt" in Swedish as well and wall is "mur" in Swedish too; if wall now is mur in Polish :cheesy:

Forum is forum in Swedish too. So I guess that word is pretty universal...

About school systems... In Sweden we don't have different university "levels". The difficulties of the different programs depends upon what kind of program you choose. Studying to be a doctor is of course harder than studying to become a masseus. Not everyone studies for a whole program though. There are also smaller courses that you can take. You get credit for these courses, which can be used in applying for a job etc.

Then we have this "preparatory school". You can enter this school at any age, if you have some grades from secondary school (high school) that you want to improve so that the chance to get into a desired university gets bigger.

That's about it.

Stef wrote:Just wanted to tell you that I loved Stardust Lady. I listened to it today, and can't help but move on its rhythm. :P I liked the Nostalgia Locomotive better today than I did yesterday. :) I think I just had to get used to it.
I think that both of those songs are songs that grow on you  But I'm completely in love with Nostalgia locomotive and I love the sound in Lady Stardust... That song is by the way the inspiration source for the new layout on my homepage :)

Take care everyone!

Well... we don't really use the word any more, but it's like a standard word people use with hangman. Everyone knows it now, however, and since a lot of letters are the same, it's easy to guess. When you don't the word, though, it's pretty hard. :P

Hottentotten... It's a people, I think. (That's weird, saying a people ) Let me see if I can find anything about it... :D

Okay, I found out that the Khoikhoi people from Africa used to be called Hottentotten by us Dutch people. I mean, you won't find the word in a dictionary or anyting, but it does exist. It was used ages back in time, I guess when we started to colonize Africa or something.

Now, however, no one really knows what the word Hottentotten means. People use it for fun, mostly, because it's such a weird word (yes, we think it's weird, too ).

Oh, wow, look at what I've found!

http://www.kinderlines.nl/html/kleurpl_ ... otten.html

Those are Hottentotten!

This is real, though: the name hottentottententententoonstelling [hottentotten-tenten(tents)-tentoonstelling (exhibition)] refers to the freakshows and carnivals held in the beginning of the 20th century.

Don't ask me why. :?

Aaanyhow, Josephin... I heard that University College wants to speak to me! Yay! :D I'm actually quite nervous about it.

Oh well. I have to meet them the 28th of January... That's kinda soon, ,actually. In... 8 days! Next week! :wow:

The thing is - I have no idea how you should pronounce it in Polish. To me, it are just some numbers and weird characters and things... It's a beautiful poetic sentence, though.

Mmm. To me, it seems as if there are only consonants in it (I think that's the word for it - letters that aren't the a/u/i/o/e) so I can hardly pronounce it. :?

Anyway, I think it's a fun sentence. :D

LEO - You learnt Vietnamese? That's so cool... 8)

Stef, hun, are you going on a interview in 8 days?!! That's scary. Are you nervous yet? But I don't think you have anything to be nervous about. Do what I did preparing for my IB interview. Walk around at home and talk to yourself in English. You won't believe the very insightful conversations I had with myself in the bathroom mirror

We have to talk more about this on the msnm before you have that interview!

My best friend speaks Polish and I don't understand anything. Only "pa" (that's probably not the right spelling ), because she says it over and over again when her mother calls her and she wants her mother to hang up. It's goodbye, right?

Well... commercial break is over so I'm going back to watching "Pearl Harbor"

STEFANIE - :) - yea, I've learned some words... But I was never sure do I say it in a proper way or just say something else :cheesy: I've decided do choose something more popular: english, german, italian... some french. But vietnamise is something that sounds really great :)

JOSEPHIN - talkin' with yourself is a one from the most interesting conversations ;) It' s always nice to talk to somebody intelligent :cheesy:
But bathroom is THE very best place for singing... not only talking. You just come in and ... no mercy for neighbours 8) Sing for the moment... They have an occasion to lern some new lyrics, and whole house is glad to join ;)

Oy. It still seems rather difficult to me. I don't think I'll ever learn Polish.

Does anyone know what exactly the difference is between the oo in foot and the oo in boot? I can't hear it. :? To me, it all sounds the same. I mean, the only difference between foot and boot is the f/b. :|

Josephin: I know! :D I'm talking a lot to myself lately, in English. On the bicycle on my way to school and back again, in the bathroom, etc. etc. I'm thinking of what I should say when they ask me this, or that, and keep coming up with different answers. The thing is, when I talk to myself, it all sounds okay, but when I have to talk to someone I know, it leaves my mouth, like, distorted. I know what to say, and how to say it, but it sounds stupid, just because I'm nervous.

Oh well. We'll definitely talk about it on msn. 8)

You're watching Pearl Harbor?! That's so cool. I want to see that movie, too. :D Matt Damon played in it, didn't he?

LEO - Know what you mean. I never know if I'm speaking French or German in a proper way, either. Same goes for English, btw. You've learnt a lot of languages! :D
LEO wrote:JOSEPHIN - talkin' with yourself is a one from the most interesting conversations ;) It' s always nice to talk to somebody intelligent :cheesy:
LOL!

P.S. I had an English writing test today, for my finals, and I had to write to an Irish penpall, and discuss publications by a journalist. :frown: Thankfully, it wasn't too difficult. Only 260 words in 100 minutes, and we could use a dictionary, so... I picked your name, Josephin, when I needed to make up a penpall. Hope you don't mind. :cheesy: I think it will bring me a lot of luck. :D

:) That was Josh Hartnett and Ben Affleck... Pearl harbour . I won't say anything about this film  but the scene with the champagne was great :cheesy:

With foreign languages is only the one problem. When you try to figure out proper word in proper language, your memory gives you proper word in different language ;) Anyway, Pronounciation was always easier for me than grammar :) OK. SKIP the language subject. Sounds like school :D

And writting... that's a DIFFERENT story. I was miserable, when somebody made me write for number of words. It's really hard to keep story short, essential, interesting without time to reveal the plot and possibility to describe characters properly...

Josh Hartnett and Ben Affleck... :D I knew some hotties played in it. I think that Ben Affleck looks better than Matt Damon, though.

Mm. Now I'm all curious. I want to know what happened in the scene with the champagne. I, of course, have a small idea of what might happen. I really want to see that movie! :D

Writing.. Well, I don't know. Personally, I think it's easier than speaking. When you write, you can think things over, and can delete/scratch the words you picked and replace them with others. When you speak, you can't.

Of course, you can still make spelling mistakes and stuff, but still... :D Mmmm... writing a story is... well, a different story.

I don't know. I mean, I love to write, but it's not like I'm all that good in it. It's fun to do, and it's even more fun when people tell you they like it. I just love to write, though I don't seem to have enough time to do it.

Anyhow... I should work on my essay. My part needs to be done tonight, so I'll have to work very hard... :frown:

Hellooo!

I'm having troubles accessing this page... Someone else having the same problem...?

Anyway, I'm here now
LEO wrote:And writting... that's a DIFFERENT story. I was miserable, when somebody made me write for number of words. It's really hard to keep story short, essential, interesting without time to reveal the plot and possibility to describe characters properly...
I couldn't agree with you more. Writing something when you are only allowed to write for a specific number of words is so hard. I can never keep it short. Let's just take fanfiction as an example. I would love to write a short story, with only one or at the most three chapters, but I already know beforehand that I would fail. I guess I love to go in depth with everything too much. And I love details. So..hmm... Well...

Stef wrote:Writing.. Well, I don't know. Personally, I think it's easier than speaking. When you write, you can think things over, and can delete/scratch the words you picked and replace them with others. When you speak, you can't.
Yep, that's it. Just ask my friends. I'm lousy at calling them, because I hate telephones . I think they are too impersonal. And then when I finally stand face to face with someone I can't think of anything to say. I think it's because I'm not a small talk person. I want to have something important and substantial to say and if I don't, I don't consider it important to talk at all... I'm weird, I know lol

I prefer letters and msnm... Although, the bad side of it all is that writing can be misunderstood much easily than speech...

Stef wrote:I don't know. I mean, I love to write, but it's not like I'm all that good in it.
Oh puhlease!! As if! You are so good at writing, Stef!! How many times do I have to tell you?! You are marvelous! Okay? Got it? Good. :D

And Stef, I've been trying to reach you during the last couple of days but works has got the better out of me and you haven't been online when I have been... I think your interview was tomorrow, so I'll send you a lot of positive thoughts. You'll do fine, I'm convinced. *big good luck hug*

Take care everyone!!

JOSEPHIN - yes, unfortunately most of us had proplems with acces forum, but hope so not for long anymore. I am not specialist from this things, but I like to think, that this serwer has so many visitors, that it is hard for it to work as usual :D And it is so grat to think, that we have You, fans from different countries.

Writting... yeah. Once I put here, in forum, small story. I like to call it "dark one". I started to dream it at the beginning of August. Nan said she like it. Maxel convinced me to post it here. Oh, that was great feeling to read all their opinions, live this story once again with those people. But... and here is a moment when I'm comming back to the right discussion ;) - but I was so afraid to continue this story. Finishing it was the hardest thing. Saying goodbye to my own heroe's is painful :) So I probably know how you feel at the end of your stories. But.. BUT it is so wonderful to know, that these stories exists.
